The Medical career broadly centers on doctors. A physician diagnoses a patient, recommends a treatment and prescribes medicines for disease, while surgeons perform operations. Allopathic medicine is one of the largest and most extensive fields of study and research. Other than Allopathy, medicine also covers different fields like Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Siddha, and Unani.
There are roughly 40 different specialties for the physicians to choose from. Post-graduation and specialization is offered in Pediatrics, Surgery, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Microbiology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Biochemistry, Radiology, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Physiology, Orthopedic Surgery, Anatomy and Preventive Medicine, etc. After specialization there is a choice of further super specialization such as Cardiologist, Neurosurgery, Nephrologists, Pediatric surgeon, Gastroenterologist, Cardiothoracic surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, etc.
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) course is 4 and a half years of classroom study followed by a year of rotating internship that is a total of 5 and a half years. Doctors who graduate are awarded an M.B.B.S. Degree and are general physicians. Graduate doctors have to take an entrance test for post-graduation.
