India is one of the leading countries in the field of basic research. Science in the Indian context has come to be regarded as one of the most powerful instruments of growth and development. In the wake of the recent developments across the world new expectations and demands are being placed on the shoulders of Science and Technology. It is necessary for Indians to work and succeed in some major projects and discoveries which have relevance to national needs and which will also be relevant for tomorrow’s technology.
The Department of Science and Technology plays a pivotal role in promotion of science and technology in the country. The department has wide ranging activities ranging from promoting high end basic research and development of cutting edge technologies to service the technological requirements of the common man through development of appropriate skills and technologies.
The National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) was established in the year 1982 by the Government of India under the aegis of the Department of Science and Technology. NSTEDB is an institutional mechanism to help promote knowledge based and technology driven enterprises. It has representations from sociology-economic and scientific departments and institutions and its aim is to convert “job-seekers” into “job-generators” through Science and Technology interventions.
