Combined Defence Services

The Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS) is conducted twice a year by the UPSC for recruitment into the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy. The Notification for the examination is usually released in the months of October and June, and the examinations are conducted in February and November respectively.

Only unmarried graduates are eligible to sit for the exam. Successful candidates are admitted into the respective Academies after an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB). The selection process consists of a written exam and personality test by the Service Selection Board. After the final selection, the candidates are sent to one of the following institutes for orientation training-

• Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun
• Naval Academy, Goa
• Air Force Academy, Begumpet, Hyderabad
• Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai

The candidates are sent to the above institutions depending upon their choice indicated in the application forms and merit list ranking. Those joining the first three institutes, get permanent commission and cadets passing out of OTA get short service commission.
