Indian Administrative Services Main Exam
For the civil services the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the All India Combined Competitive Examination every year. This exam is considered to be the one of the most prestigious as well as difficult exams in the country. The exam is held in 2 stages-the preliminary exam, which is objective type and the main exam, which is subjective and is followed by an interview. The duration of each paper is 3 hours.
The optional papers are- Agriculture, Botany, Chemistry, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Civil Engineering, Geography, Geology, Electrical Engineering, Commerce, Economics, Indian History, Law, Medical Science, Philosophy, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Political Science, Sociology, Statistics, Psychology, Public Administration, Zoology.
The following papers are included in the main examination-
Paper I- It is on one Indian language which is to be selected by the candidate and is of 300 marks.
Paper II- The second paper is of English and carries 30 marks.
Paper III- It is the essay section and carries 200 marks.
Paper IV and V-Both the papers are of 300 marks and on general studies.
Paper VI to IX- These are optional papers selected by the candidate. Two papers are to be selected with each carrying 300 marks.
Combinations not allowed-
Anthropology and Sociology
Commerce and Management
Maths and Statistics
Management and Public Administration
Medical Science and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science.
Public Administration and Political Science and International Relations
Veterinary Science and Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
Any two branches of engineering.
The main exam is followed by an interview, a medical test and the probationary officers have to undergo training
